Ticks can be a dangerous nuisance and it is important to know ways to help prevent bites. It is important to remember that both you and your pet can get ticks.
Cedar oil spray
Cedar oil is a non-toxic, natural tick and insect repellent. It can be sprayed directly on clothing and skin. It is safe for use on humans and animals. Cedar oil not only repels ticks and other irritating insects, it also kills them. Cedar oil spray can be purchased online and at most stores and large retailers.
Homemade tick and insect repellent
Try this simple recipe. Simply mix and apply to exposed skin before going outside:
- 9 drops of citronella essential oil,
- 6 drops of tea tree oil,
- 6 drops peppermint oil,
- 1 tablespoon of almond or jojoba oil.
Eucalyptus oil is known to be an effective tick repellent and killer. Just combine 100 ml of purified or distilled water in a small spray bottle along with 20 drops of eucalyptus oil. It needs to be shaken before use and can be sprayed on the skin. The remedy is safe for dogs (eucalyptus oil should be diluted with water before applying on the coat).
Indian honey oil
This oil is used as a natural tick repellent and tick killer. To apply it, pour a few drops onto the palm of your hand and massage into exposed skin. It can also be diluted and mixed with almond or other light oil. When diluted, it is safe for dogs. To remove a tick, apply a drop or two directly to the tick and it will quickly fall off.
Apple cider vinegar
This wonderful natural remedy also helps repel ticks. The following solution can be sprayed on clothing and exposed skin, and even on garden furniture. Combine the following items in a spray bottle:
- 2 cups of water,
- 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar,
- 2 tablespoons of Indian honey oil.
Some aromatherapy essential oils
Not only do they smell great, but they are also known as natural tick repellents. Ticks can’t stand the smell of lemon, orange, cinnamon, lavender, peppermint, and rose geranium, so they avoid grabbing onto anything that smells like that. Any of the scents or a combination of them can be used in sprays or added to almond oil and rubbed into exposed skin
We all know that garlic has excellent health properties, and now we can add another plus to the list. Regular consumption of garlic or garlic capsules reduces the risk of tick bites. Garlic causes the body to emit an odor that repels ticks.
- Do not feed garlic to pets. If you are looking for products for your pet – talk to your veterinarian
- Do not use essential oils on cats. Consult your veterinarian for effective flea and tick control in cats.
- Always dilute solutions before applying them to your dog
What if you notice a tick on your dog?
If you notice a tick walking on your clothing, or if you have traveled to an area where the risk of a tick biting you is increased, follow these steps.
Grab a lint roller (be sure to bring one with you on trips!). A lint roller is great for removing ticks of any size from skin and clothing. Carry it with you and use it periodically on your skin and clothing (and pet hair). Drop clothing into hot water for 10-15 minutes to kill lurking ticks. Conduct a full inspection of yourself, family members and pets. Wash your hair and hop in the shower. Rinse your pets with an outdoor hose before going inside.
