Fresh herbs can undoubtedly change the taste of any dish. Therefore, if you dream of growing them yourself, you can easily start on your windowsill. All you need is a bit of space, time and desire to conjure up an aromatic herb garden in your home

Where is the best place to grow herbs?

Before you start growing herbs at home, you should first of all find a suitable place for them. Herbs, like all plants, need direct access to daylight , so it’s best to place them on your kitchen windowsill. In addition, thanks to such location you can be sure that they will always be at hand during the preparation of meals, and also enrich and introduce a bit of greenery to the kitchen arrangement

Where to plant herbs?

Having already known where to create our home herbarium, it is time to choose the containers in which we will grow them. Here the choice is almost unlimited. Both classic ceramic or plastic pots as well as wooden boxes will be perfect for this purpose. When choosing the right pot it is worth remembering that its depth should not be greater than 20 centimeters

Remember also that the pots should have holes that ensure free water drainage to the saucer

Soil for herbs

The key element that influences the success of home herb cultivation is the soil in which they will be planted. For this purpose it is best to bet on universal garden soil or soil dedicated to potted flowers. You should also make sure that the substrate you choose is neutral, fertile and humus – this will allow the plants to draw valuable nutrients from it

What herbs can I grow on my kitchen windowsill?

The choice of herbs for your home herbarium depends mainly on individual preferences. However, it is best to bet on those herbs which we use most often in a powdered, dried form. Herbs are not demanding plants so you don’t have to worry about their cultivation – just water them regularly.

Basil

Perfect for Italian dishes, rich in vitamins A, K and C as well as magnesium, iron , potassium and calcium. Its intense green color is perfect for bringing life to your windowsill. Pots of basil can be easily found in most supermarkets and gardening stores. If you want to grow it from seed, it’s best to sow it in early spring

Coriander

Coriander perfectly accentuates the character of meat and fish dishes, as well as Asian cuisine. In addition, it aids digestion and helps maintain proper blood sugar levels . It is best to sow it in summer because it grows faster thanks to the abundance of sunlight

Oregano

If you love Italian cuisine, you cannot miss this aromatic herb in your kitchen herbarium. It is a great addition to salads, pizza, meat and seafood. It is also a rich source of vitamins E, K and C, as well as B vitamins. Oregano is best grown on windowsills facing south

Rosemary

Rosemary is a herb that not only enriches the taste of food but also thanks to its lush branches decorates kitchen windowsill. However, unlike other herbs, oregano does not like frequent watering
