Moving always involves many unpleasant tasks, including packing. Packing clothes is fairly quick and hassle-free, but securing plates, glasses and other glass items presents a challenge. Here’s how to pack glassware so it doesn’t get damaged during the move.
Transporting glasses, plates and other easily breakable items is certainly one of the most difficult parts of the move. We can outsource the glass transportation to a moving company, but we can also do it ourselves, we just need to prepare properly for it. Before we start packing glass and porcelain items, we should stock up on necessary materials. You will need:

Don’t start packing if you don’t have the materials you need. First of all, get large and sturdy cardboard boxes. Make sure their bottoms are strong enough. If you suspect that they might break apart under the weight of heavy objects, tape the bottoms (even double) with wide packing tape. Also collect bubble wrap and paper to wrap glass and porcelain items in. We can use old newspapers or plain brown packing paper.
Once you have all the materials ready, you can start wrapping your glassware. Use paper or bubble wrap to wrap them. It is best to wrap each item separately. In case of thin or particularly delicate glass or porcelain use double wrapping. If you decide to protect glass with bubble wrap, remember to seal it at the end with tape. This will prevent the foil from unwinding during transport.
With the glass items secured, you can begin packing them into boxes. Put any kind of filling on the bottom of the containers, such as paper, sawdust, bubble wrap, cotton wool or even pieces of Styrofoam. Then you can arrange the wrapped items. Start with the largest ones and put the smaller and more delicate ones on top. The spaces between the packed accessories should also be filled with paper, sawdust, cotton wool or foil. This way the items will not move during transport. Finally, neatly seal the cartons.
For safety reasons you should mark the cartons with glass items, especially if you are going to order the removal from the courier or the removal company. You can use special stickers or write on the carton with a simple marker “Attention, glass!”. It is also worth marking where the top of cardboard boxes are, it will make it easier to put them correctly and move them.
