Hair maniacs are crazy about oiling their hair. This simple hair care trick makes hair much stronger and shinier. To keep it that way for longer, it is best to repeat oiling at regular intervals.

How to Use Hair Oil?

You can use your own hair oil at home. The most popular methods are wet oiling and dry oiling.

Many women choose wet oiling, which is divided into two methods: using a conditioner and a primer. The two wet oiling methods differ in how much oil is used.

Slightly less oil is used when oiling hair with a mist, i.e. oil mixed with water or hydrolate. This mixture is poured into a bottle with an atomizer and sprayed on the hair. Conditioning oil makes hair less heavy – mix conditioner with a small amount of oil and apply it as usual – hair should be slightly damp. Keep this concoction for about 15-20 minutes and then rinse with cool water to close the hair cuticles.

Wet oiling your hair

Wet oiling makes the hair much less heavy and is therefore recommended for women with oily hair. Importantly, oiling should also be divided according to where the oil is applied to the hair. If you have split ends it is recommended to oil only the lower part of the split ends. If the split ends are long, it is best to apply a small amount of oil to the entire length of the hair, working it through with a wide-toothed comb.

When wet-oiling your hair, shampoo it first without conditioner and drain it thoroughly. Dry your hair with a cotton T-shirt or a paper towel. Only then apply the oil of your choice.

Dry Oiling Hair

Dry oiling on the other hand is quite helpful for dry and brittle hair. This method of hair care is a little less time consuming as you skip the washing and drying step. However, this method has one drawback – your hair may react to the treatment in such a way that it becomes even more dry.

A sure-fire alternative, then, would be to soak your hair in water with oil added. The oil is then absorbed into the open hair shafts and at the same time restores the hair structure.

How much oil should I use when oiling my hair?

The amount you should use depends on the length and density of your hair. Highly porous hair that is visibly brittle and weaker will need a bit more oil. It is best to add oil by trial and error. It is a good idea to warm the oil in the palms of your hands before you apply it so that it soaks into the hair structure better.

How long does it take to apply the oil?

The wet method takes only 15 minutes for the oil to deeply nourish the hair structure. Wet-oiled hair should be left in place for at least 40 minutes before shampooing. Be sure not to use a conditioner or mask after you have oiled your hair dry. They may weigh down your hair too much.

How Oily My Hair?

Hair should be oiled regularly. It is best to start by applying oil to damp hair once a week. If you do not see a big difference, you can increase the number of treatments to two per week. Some women appreciate this way of having beautiful and shiny hair, so they use oil treatments once a week and twice a week additionally apply oil to wet hair or mix it with conditioner.

Which Hair Oils to Choose?

For hair with high porosity the following oils are ideal

  • jojoba oil,
  • macadamia oil,
  • grapeseed oil.

Hair that is less damaged by styling or colouring for example will certainly look great after oiling with

  • flaxseed oil,
  • castor oil
  • babassu oil,
  • shea oil.

Highly porous hair that is characterized by brittleness and split ends should be oiled with somewhat heavier products that penetrate deep into the hair structure. On the other hand, low-porous hair is shinier and much smoother. To maintain this effect, you can use oils that are lighter and, above all, rinse out faster. This way, they will not weigh your hair down.
