Working abroad and traveling cheaply

Teach English

Cheap travel? How about the opposite – start earning money abroad! One of the best ways to earn money from travel is to teach English abroad. You can supplement your travel funds while working in Thailand, for example. All you need is fluency in English and a TEFL diploma, depending on the country you are working in. Many companies in Asia will even pay for your flight.

Airbnb and others

Use this idea to find cheaper accommodation, travel guides, ride-sharing options and home-cooked meals with local chefs. You can bypass the traditional travel industry with sites where you can get service from an individual. In addition, locals know where to look for bargains. They know which supermarket is the cheapest and where to find restaurants and bars with the tastiest food at the lowest prices. Talking to them directly provides access to valuable knowledge.

Cook your own meals

The best way to travel cheaply is to cook all your meals yourself. If you’re staying in hostels, book accommodation with a kitchen so you have access to a stove.If you use an Airbnb, your host will likely have a kitchen.

Buy train tickets

Train tickets (such as Eurail Pass in Europe or JR Pass inJapan) are a great way to save money when it comes to train travel. If you’re traveling around a region for a while, train tickets are likely to be much cheaper than booking individual trips.

If you are booking individual trips, booking in advance will usually save you about 50% of the cost of a train ticket. If you don’t want to be tied to a fixed schedule, train tickets can help you save a lot of money while providing the flexibility you need.

Take advantage of discount cards and more

Are you a student, teacher or under the age of 26? Then you have access to plenty of discounts! Even if you recently graduated, chances are you can still catch some discounts with your student ID. Always ask if there are discounts available for students or young people in general, as this is an easy way to save cash while traveling.

This is a great way to save money on attractions. Simply go to your local tourist office to find out what cards are available. Not every city has them, but most major places do, and if you plan to see the most popular sights, you’ll save a lot of money.

Staying for free

There are many services that connect travelers with locals who allow them to stay with them for free. By using such websites and services, you will not have to pay for accommodation. It would be best to repay your host’s kindness by cooking them a meal, bringing them a souvenir from home or taking them out for a drink. It will still be much cheaper than paying for accommodation.
