Insect repellent plants are our faithful allies in the fight against ticks and mosquitoes, among others. The following TOP10 list presents those that will help us maintain full comfort and safety while relaxing in the garden.

Which insects we need to watch out for the most?

To get rid of unwanted insects around our house, we should first of all choose species that secrete essential oils that create bad conditions for them to live in. Flies and mosquitoes can make life miserable for us and our pets, such as dogs and cats. Mosquitoes contribute to the death toll brought by malaria, but it does not occur in Poland

As for flies, we know that they can carry dangerous bacteria, viruses and protozoa, but the infection does not happen by biting in the mosquito’s own way. More dangerous are contaminants left for example on food eaten later by humans. A little more difficult is the case with ticks: these small arachnids can cause tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease, which can end in a significant loss of health – we are talking about nervous, cardiac and joint complications

Insect repellent plants versus ready-made insect repellents

Insect repellent plants are a natural alternative to the various types of remedies that are offered to us in stores and pharmacies. Although their high efficiency is emphasized, there are often doubts about ready-made products designed to fight against insects that make life miserable. When using them, you should always follow the posted leaflet: both in terms of dosage of the amount of substance, as well as, for example, the place of application

It is important to read the composition and verify whether it does not contain allergenic ingredients. It is also necessary to purchase products from a trusted store, you can not reach for preparations of unknown origin.

Plants that repel insects are a safer way. It is more difficult to cause allergies or actions that are dangerous to health. What about effectiveness? It has to be built up gradually: Planting a single mint bush is unlikely to free a large area around the house from dangerous insects, but a greater intensity of the smell emitted by it will permanently discourage intruders

Plants that repel mosquitoes, flies and ticks – TOP10

It is not easy to choose the TOP10 mosquito repellent plants. On the plus side, many of them have a negative impact on the existence of two or even all three types of undesirable insects. So it is worth betting on, first of all:

  • peppermint,
  • myrtle,
  • basil,
  • catnip,
  • geranium,
  • lavender,
  • mosquito plant,
  • garden dogwood,
  • velvet,
  • rosemary.

Peppermint is one of the best known natural ways to repel intrusive insects; its effects are very wide. Mosquitoes are repelled both by the smell of this herb and the mint oil made from it. Interestingly, spiders, mice and rats also dislike the smell of mint. Domestic pets can be protected from flea infestations thanks to its oil

We will also appreciate the wide spectrum of action of lavender, which will attract us not only with its beautiful scent, but also very decorative appearance. Mosquitoes and blackflies will be afraid of it and if left in a closet it will protect us against moths

Very strong and fresh scent similar to lemon has also beautiful and decorative potted geranium. Few people know that it discourages not only mosquitoes, but also flies and midges

Catnip, on the other hand, is a small perennial that our cat’s pet will chase after while chasing away intrusive insects. Its undoubted advantage is its long flowering period when the plant will delight our eyes with its blue flower.

The mosquito plant, or plecantrus, is a climber that gets its name from its properties. Its fragrant leaves have aromatic essential oils that repel mosquitoes.
