Chalk paint, French finish, chalked furniture – all terms that describe furniture that has been given an antique look by being painted over with a chalk paint mixture. You can achieve a similar effect at home by following these simple steps. The best thing about this kind of decorating is the fact that it doesn’t require the use of specialized equipment and it doesn’t involve sanding, staining or varnishing.

What is chalk paint?

The paint that you put on your walls is called paint. The paint that you put on your furniture is called chalk paint. Chalk paint is a type of white, matte, water-based, non-toxic and eco-friendly paint. It’s easy to apply (just like any other type of paint), dries quickly and doesn’t require sanding or priming first. The finish will give it a chalky feel which can be good if you’re looking for an antique or rustic look. It also requires less effort because it dries quicker so if you don’t have much time then this might be the best option for you! Another benefit of this type of paint is that there are no chemicals involved in the making process so no harsh fumes are released into the air when applying.

How to prepare your furniture for painting

Start by removing the hardware from your furniture and sanding it down. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and allow it to dry. Next, use an oil-based primer that’s specially formulated for painting over chalk paint. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. Then, you’ll need three coats of chalk paint in your desired color. It may take up to 48 hours for each coat of paint to dry before you can apply another one on top of it.

How to apply chalk paint

The first thing you’ll want to do is clean your furniture with an all-purpose cleaner. This will remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on the surface of your piece. Next, use a lint-free cloth and some water (or maybe even some vinegar) to dampen the surface and remove any dust that may have settled there. Be sure not to leave any water droplets sitting on the surface, as this can cause paint to run when it’s applied. Finally, apply a coat of chalk paint with a brush or roller.

What kind of finish to use

There are many ways that you can give your furniture a French facelift. One way is to paint the furniture with chalk paint. Chalk painted furnitire is easy to use and gives wood or metal pieces an instant antiqued look. It’s also great for people who don’t want to sand their piece before they start painting, as there’s no need for sanding in order to prepare the surface before applying chalk paint. Once you’ve finished painting your piece, you’ll need a clear sealer coat in order to protect it from water damage and staining; this will also help prevent the colors from running if the piece gets wet.
